How Many Calories In Prosecco?

Whether you like to enjoy a glass with a romantic Italian meal, or pop a cork in celebration, prosecco has become one of the most popular drinks in the UK. Prosecco is the best-selling sparkling wine in the world by volume and experts say its taking away from the market share of Champagne. Many of us view this Italian sparkling wine as an affordable luxury with a touch of sophistication - but have you ever wondered how many calories are in this fabulous drink?

How many calories are there in prosecco on average?

On average, one 125ml glass of 12% ABV prosecco contains around 90 calories. To put that into perspective, drinking three 125ml glasses would provide a similar amount of calories to eating a burger from a fast food restaurant. Of course, there’s no hard and fast rule and each brand of prosecco is different.

The number of calories in a glass of prosecco depends on the sugar content, the alcohol content and the serving size. During the fermentation process, sugar in the grapes is converted to alcohol and carbon dioxide, and some residual sugar remains, accounting for extra calories.

The type of prosecco you choose will have a bearing on how many calories your glass contains, as the sugar content affects the amount of calories. For example, Brut tends to contain the least amount of sugar (less than 12 grams per litre), whilst demi-sec typically contains the highest amount of sugar (32-50 grams per litre.

Does prosecco have more or less calories than wine?

Whilst many of us may save prosecco for special occasions and celebrations as a treat, it may surprise you to learn than prosecco typically contains less calories than wine - in an average sized glass, prosecco has around 60 calories fewer than wine.

This is partly due to the lower alcohol content typically found in prosecco when compared with other wines. For the fizz fanatics, prosecco offers not only a more affordable option to champagne, but also contains less calories than champagne whilst still providing the same fizzy, light, fruity taste.
